Identify the Causes

Firstly, check if your workload is unrealistic or if you have too many projects. Are you unsupported, left to hang out to dry without any assistance? Get as specific as you can about where the stress comes from. Tracking your daily tasks, responsibilities, and time spent will help you diagnose what makes you feel most overwhelmed. It’s very hard to change what you’re not tracking.

Set Boundaries

Do this as early as possible. The more acclimated people become to you being the do-it-all workhorse, the more they’ll come to expect it from you and take you for granted. Are you ‘job drunk’? Many people are, overextending themselves and drastically compromising their family, home, and health life. And for what?
A job? A business?
You can’t benefit from a good salary or profit with poor health or no one to share it with. Get your priorities right.
No one else can do it for you, or cares either.

Plan and Prioritize

I work with a lot of military veterans, and there is so much that military systems get right. If you haven’t ever heard the following, you’re missing out:
P!ss Poor Planning Promotes P!ss Poor Performance.
Direct, but to the point. Effective planning and prioritization will significantly reduce overwhelm.
Outline weekly tasks and identify those which are critical. Make a list and break larger projects into smaller chunks. Tick them off when done.
You’re tracking your progress now—good skills!

Taking Breaks

Taking breaks isn’t weak or lazy; it’s strategic and necessary.
Optimal performance doesn’t come from being tired all the time, overworked, underslept, and poorly nourished. Yes, it’s easy to forget the importance of taking breaks, especially when you’re feeling under pressure. However, taking five minutes to stretch, move your body a little, change your location, or feel fresh air on your face can significantly change how you feel.

Consider the practices of UFC fighters and boxers, who fight in rounds and rest between them. Are they weak? Soldiers route march for miles but stop to rest and rehydrate. Are they lazy? Try the Pomodoro Technique: 25 minutes of work followed by a 5-minute rest. Make and take allotted breaks. The end.

Managing Your Emotions

Regulating your emotions is a critical component to avoid burnout.
Recognize your feelings in those moments; all emotions pass, both good and ‘bad.’ Talk it through with a confidante or colleague who won’t throw you under the bus or leverage this at some opportune moment later. Avoid self-medicating with alcohol or drugs; that’s just you trying (and failing) to escape from the problem.

Mindfulness isn’t utter nonsense when done right. A consistent, simple practice can genuinely be a game changer, bringing calm and resilience. Do it.

Take Care of Yourself

Self-care isn’t a first-world, overhealthy, pathetic concept; it’s a requirement for optimal output. Ensure you incorporate the following:

1. SLEEP. This is above an beyond the most important item on this list. Do this one thing an master it, and you’re winning.

2. Exercise both gently and strenuously [as is appropriate for you].

3. Get into Nature.

4. Drink water. Eat Fruits and Vegetables, get enough protein. [if you lift, you probably need more than you think].

5. Spend time with selected other humans. I know you don’t feel like it, but your mental health requires it, and mostly you’ll feel better for it.

6. Do something that gives back, pays forward, benefits greater than self, charity, helping sloths cross the road etc.

7. Buy footwear.
